A team in America analysing gut microbiome outputs in blood samples found evidence for a potential link between ageing patterns and microbiome composition in the gut. They identified that healthy ageing in individuals could be partly predicted by a depletion of core gut microbe genera (particularly Bacteroides) typically found in humans. Where this depletion wasn’t found, individuals had decreased survival in a 4-year follow up. The microbiome is a current growing area of research so the link identified here could be especially beneficial for future work in the field of ageing.
